Stingray - Tidal Generator II

Hydrographic and geophysical surveys carried out by our Land and Marine Survey Division have provided information crucial to the positioning of the worlds first underwater tidal generator:

Stingray

Capable of generating 150kw, the 24m high machine uses passing current movements to oscillate the underwater wing and drive a generator via a hydraulic transmission

Two important factors governing the siting of the Stingray are a level sea bed and appropriate current conditions. After identifying a suitable flat 60m sqr site in the Yell Sound off Shetland, the Surveys Division went on to establish the direction and magnitude of the prevailing currents through the water column. An underwater video survey was also carried out identify the presence of any species of conservational interest.

Having established the ideal site the Stingray was successfully deployed during the summer 2002.

Personnel involved with the project included Russell Venning, Tom Bennetts, Cherri-Ann Rennie and Troy Tempest.
