Super Jumbo Order
On 19 December 2000 Airbus UK Ltd announced that they had secured orders for over fifty of their new large double decker aircraft nicknamed Super Jumbos but officially A380. The wings for these planes will be manufactured at Broughton near our Chester Office. The wings for all Airbus aircraft are made at the Broughton facility and are flown to France or Germany for assembly into the aircraft. All wings are currently flown from the Broughton site inside the A300-600ST Beluga aircraft. However, the wings of the new Super Jumbo will be too large to be accommodated inside the aircraft and therefore transportation by barge along the River Dee to Mostyn Docks and then onwards by ship is being investigated.
The Survey Division based at our Chester Office carried out an initial phase of surveys in November 2000 and on 18 December 2000 a second phase of surveys were commissioned. The two phases of surveys comprise:
Phase 1:
- Hydrographic survey of 12km of the River Dee.
- Topographic survey of a 60Ha area alongside the River Dee, Broughton Airport and the farmland between.
- Measured/clearance surveys of three bridges.
Phase 2:
- Installation of two permanent tide gauges and monitoring of the gauges for three years.
- Oceanographic surveys including current, turbidity and salinity measurement.
